What is a 'Dollar' Store ??
Long ago when a US dollar was worth something, chains of 'dollar' stores popped up. These ingenious places of business offered stuff for a dollar. Everything was a dollar. Nothing had a price tag on it. Store owners saved big bucks on labor costs. One of the greatest simple pleasures in life was to walk into a 'dollar' store, pick up a random item, and announce "How much is this?" There was no better way to embarrass the family.
Times change. These days a 'dollar' store offers values on popular items and closeouts, but prices vary widely. The 'dollar' motif may be somewhat misleading, but it's nevertheless a fun place to shop.
- Dollar Store
- Dollar Tree
- Family Dollar
- Everything's a Dollar
- You are a cheapskate if you will only spend a dollar (just kidding)
If the Shamwow folks order too many amazingly absorbent towels from their Asian manufacturers, they may unload the excess onto the 'dollar' store market. Someone has to liquidate all the extra toothpicks floating around on the wholesale market. Nowhere else can you find mass quantities of merchandise that was blazingly popular last week and virtually unrecognizable this week.

Number 9 on your list made me nearly choke on my water! We have a Dollar Tree in town...I love that place! They have great party supplies...and I always know how much I'm spending!
"Wow! A 10% rebate for using my American Express Card." Really, which shop can I get this?
We call them "$2 Stores" downunder and they are chock full of cheap Asian merchandise which comes in so handy. When I come to America I'll have to look up one of your "Dollar Stores".
I admit, I shopped at a local $$$ store. I heard this question to the sales lady, "How much is this?" Great hub.
Unfortunately, we aren't that fortunate here in South Africa. No such thing as Dollar Stores. Whatever we want to buy here, we have to pay full price for, and we also don't have the luxury of coupons either.
Maybe it's time for the Dollar Store concept to reach us here :-)
I'm laughing so hard, I choked on my breakfast.
I've got singles so lets go shopping!
I love the new Dollar store here, it's so cool, with $10, you actually get to take home 10 items...Very Funny!

nicomp - you are maligning the greatest shopping experience one can have - shopping for stuff in an authentic dollar store.
What we need to do is get rid of all those high-priced imitators like the $2, $3 and $5 dollar stores who pretend to be dollar stores but are not the real thing.
