I am a Level 6 Commenter
61I am a Comment Ninja
We live in a society of computations. Everyone hates math, but we all love a simple concrete number. Presidents bend to public opinion polls (margin of error +/- 3%.) The law dictates that maturity begins at age 21. The government defines 'poverty' based on a specific annual income. Numbers are everywhere.
Recently, a new number graced our digital lives. In the gold ol' days we commented on hubs without a second thought. We had no idea that anyone was paying attention. As it turns out, HubPages computers continuously cipher. Clandestine calculations at HubPages headquarters consider commenting to be an activity worthy of quantitative assessment. We have each been assigned a Commenter Level.
I am a Level 6 Commenter. Hopefully that comes with a decoder ring and a secret handshake.
I am a HubPages Commenter
When I deposit a comment on a third-party hub, my Commenter Level is recorded along with my verbiage. If I am the author of the hub (yes, I do comment on my own hubs), my Commenter Level is omitted. I have no control over this process.
Some of my friends also have Commenter Levels. These are my digital friends: they probably wouldn't like me all that much if we lived in the same neighborhood or stood in line at the same Starbucks. We probably enjoy different TV shows and prefer different brands of lip balm. We come together as a cadre of commenters. We are joined by this simple but significant numeric value.
I am Level 6
As I write this, I am a Level 6 Commenter. That may be extremely good or woefully deficient. It's just a number, but when I see the work of a Level 8 Commenter or a Level 5 Commenter, I wonder just how far apart we might be.
Perhaps reaching the next level is as simple as leaving copious comments on the hubs of other authors. It's possible that HubPages takes into account word size and sentence length when calculating a Commenter Level. There's always a chance that this new number somehow factors into Hub Score or Hub Ranking or even Hub Happiness (I made that one up.)
How High Is High?
Brief online research indicates that Level 8 Commenters achieve at the highest level. Additional strata may exist: if you have soared to Level 9 or above, let us know. Leave a comment here: it probably won't hurt your level.

UUUUUU, I want a decoder ring and a secret handshake too! It would be nice to know how it is judged. If word length was important, I could add more "U"'s to my first word. Or I could ramble on and on if length is important. But I definitely go for the ring and handshake.
nicomp - what do you say we go into business together and sell decoder rings to hubbers who want to raise their commenter level. I haven't a clue, of course, how that happens but it'll be our secret.
Oh, and thanks for including one of my favorite versified comments. Maybe a veritable plethora of rhyming is a clue.
It is a long story, of course, however, the evidence is scattered all over my hubs and hubs of others. The main idea is consistency. I don't have to count.
How many times have I been married? 42.
Let others worry about their levels go up and down, left and right. I simply pick the number. My Creativity Level? Right. 42.
I do NOT have a level outwardly, but inwardly I have surpassed level 9. I wear the ring around my collar as any hard working commentor should.
No matter what my level of commenting is, I'm content with it.
Ah, very cool. Maybe I never noticed this feature? I need to get commenting more often it seems ha!
Nicomp
My decoder ring has been set for me at level 4; all I can get out of it is ....be sure to drink your Olvatine...
I've been wondering what this mythical number means too. Has anyone noticed it changing since it crept into their lives? My favorite cereal is Special K with strawberries. Please make sure it comes with a decoder ring.
I'm a six too! I think that's kinda' like a C+, or possibly a B-, which is exactly what I was hoping for.
Now I'll need months of therapy because my self-esteem has fallen, knowing I'm not as good as a level 7 or 8 commenter.
Better comment nice on your way up; you never know who'll be commenting on yours on the way down. Nice un nicomp.
I am still waiting for the secret handshake and my decoder ring.
Funny hub! I have a high commenter level . . but not a high overall score -- like you. I've always been taught not to covet . . . so I'm striving on my own. Ha!
I thought I was at the top of the pack with a level 6 (as I write this I am not entirely sure it has not downgraded) until I saw some jerk with a level 7, and of course right above me is a pretentious level 8er - grrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Now my life is completely incomplete until I get to that 8, because eight is great. And if someone has a higher score than me, I am a sorry sack of potatoes.
But actually, if I'm a 6, then I am relieved because I am on par with you and Stan, and you are both almost great writers (you would be great if you were eights right?).
Is this place looking a little more like Facebook with all the encouragement from the office to interact more? Probably.
And for the record, I don't care what the programs say, you and the likes of Stan are both tens in my book. I love Hubpages, but they can shove their timeclock up their attic.
LOL Nicomp. As a lover of numbers - can you go into NEGATIVE like -5 commentator? (if you leave enough banal comments) howabout floats like level 1.2340983850988 commentator - that would be getting really nitty gritty - -How about spending years on -0.999997 - it would be quite excruciating trying to lift yourself into the positive but not ever knowing how or the secret decoder.
At least if I had a decoder ring I could pretend I understand these scores. I go to sleep and my hub score is a 96 and when I wake up it's a 92. Are they trying to drive me crazy? Yes, I believe they are. Up and funny!
I am confused: Level means a horizontal plane. So, does hubbers play on a "level" field? Perhaps some play in a multi-story complex festooned with penthouses on different levels?
Perhaps there will be a market for penthouses with high numbers...
Enjoyed your article. Number six notwithstanding, great article! Flag up!
Hehe It is the first time I notice of the comment level, just readed a spammer with a "level 6 commenter" tag and then searched for it on google, your hub was there to explain ^^...it would be good to know the approximate number needed to reach any level, just as curiosity.
Hi,
I'm a level 6 commenter as well, atleast at the moment. Am I in a rush to make it to level 7,8,9, and 10? Actually no, I'm not in a rush to make those numbers. But I do admire the level 7, 8, 9, and 10 or higher commenters. Thanks great hub.
Ha, ha, I am a level 7 commentator. I am thinking of leaving lots of comments that are total gibberish in order to get to that #1 commentator which just sounds better! I hate this crap. What, when you see a lower rated commentator do you automatically discount what they have to say?
Yeah! I just made Level 5 Commentator - and thank YOU for explaining what the numbers mean. Your Hub was very helpful. Rated UP and USEFUL.
I really enjoyed this hub. I have no idea how the numbers are decided on HubPages. What I think is good, sometimes, HubPages doesn't and vice versa. So I just comment and try to have fun on HubPages and I don't worry what number and/or ranking I have. I think all the writers on HubPages I've run on to are interesting, insightful and good writers. So, I don't know how this web-site differentiates. I think it is their deep, dark secret and we are not suppose to know how they do it. I just hope the HubPages gods are smiling down on me.
I've often wondered about the commenter levels. I never noticed a number beside any of my comments. I've been here for a little over two years now and don't feel like I've really made that much progress. Hopefully, the comments that I leave are useful to someone at some point in time, with the exception to this one, as it really couldn't be helpful in my opinion.
Anyway, great hub! Thanks for the insightful info!
I'm new to hubpages so am most likely a level 1 or level zero commenter. Basically whatever the lowest level is, I'm very likely that. I find it quite fascinating that there are all of these aspects of hubpages that I'm only just now learning about, such as commenter level and whatnot.
Hopefully in time I'll have left enough meaningful and useful comments to work my way up to a level that's somewhat respectable. Time will tell. In the meantime, thanks for creating this informative hub.
The most useful thing to observe is that some of the levels have changed since the comments were left. . . seems that none have gone down--none that I noticed, at least.
Probably a straight-up numbers thing, then.
I started hubpages as no level of commentator and after commenting some comments in two or three days i reached level 1 on commenting. I love commenting after reading hubs as comments are made to judge your work among public.
I became level 1 commenter a while ago so I wondered what does it mean. It seems it is one of many ways used by Hubpages to motivate the member to be active. OK, why not? :)

Oh, the fascination with numbers!!!
Just pick one and be happy with it. My number is 42 and therefore I am "Level 42 Commenter". Where does it say so? In many places, which are hard to find - even better - my level is clandestine.
I am "firing off notes in anger and from a sitting position. The weapon is not specified, but the frequency is Forty Two Point Zero Five = 42.05".
Do you think that if anyone assigns you a number or you pick a number yourself anything changes that much?
My meaninfulness and insightfulness is consistent. I am practically full of it. The number is not important.
